Saunas & cold water swimming

Extremes of temperature such as saunas & cold water immersion are so beneficial for your mind & body, check out below all the amazing things they can offer:

Here at our wellbeing retreat we have a glass fronted sauna that overlooks our private gardens and field and is heated with our own seasoned logs, fabulous whatever the weather is doing outside. The sauna is next to our swimming pond that was here when we moved in but we emptied it and cleaned it out of decades of leaves and silt. It is pretty deep throughout and at it deepest about 11 feet, so great for diving off the decking. Then over the months it naturally filled with rain water. We have put in some pumps to keep the water moving and also many pond plants that naturally filtrate the water and there are no fish which can make the water murky. So the water in the pond feels and smells fantastically clean and your skin feels amazing after you get out.

Medical News Today reports on saunas:

“When a person sits in a sauna, their heart rate increases and blood vessels widen. This increases circulation, in a similar way to low to moderate exercise depending on the duration of the sauna use. Their heart rate may increase to 100-150 beats a minute while using a sauna. This may bring some health benefits including:

  • Easing muscular pain
  • Reducing stress levels
  • Improving cardiovascular health – lower blood pressure and enhanced heart function.
  • Improving skin problems
  • Improving Asthma symptoms
  • Lowering the risk of Alzheimer’s “

The benefits of cold water swimming are also numerous:

  • It boosts your immune system
  • Your gut microbes love temperature extremes
  • It enhances your mood as the cold water activates endorphins
  • It improves your circulation & metabolism
  • It reduces stress & helps improve sleep
  • It increases your libido
  • It burns calories
